Utopia
Utopia is an undergraduate thesis project dedicated to addressing Toronto's housing crisis. During the 2022-2023 academic year, I developed the tabletop board game, created to accomplish three goals: to educate others about the injustices of the issue, to compile practical resources that can be used outside of the game to secure housing, and to make comparisons to successful global policies that have tackled this problem.
Utopia pays tribute to The Landlord’s Game by Elizabeth Magie, a feminist entrepreneur whose idea was later stolen to be developed into the board game Monopoly. I pay homage to Magie's original intentions by featuring two methods of play that depict the contrast between an equitable society and an individualistic one.
